I purchased a couple of these 1/2 wooden baskets from OFE International a few weeks ago.They are perfect for mounting staghorn ferns.The basket is not too deep and supports the staghorn when it's tied in place.They come in several sizes.I purchased them for an encyclia that keeps climbing out of its pot and a small staghorn fern.

i found a site called "Epiphyte tree" which had an article on making containers from old plam fronds I've made a couple and placed in a couple of locations with various media to see how they hold up. talk about aesthetic not to metion cheap?? lol gary

Our society had a well known commercial phal grower that liked the flat mounts. He used just 2 wires so it would be vertical. He said they retained more water and the center grow point was less at risk of water crown rot.

What he is saying is true if any mounted Phal.. The real question is whether the square flat mounts present any advantage over conventional mounts such as cork bark , slats of shingles or branches. They look good but seem to offer no other substantial advantage.

Earnest-looking dog. *I* would trust his opinion. If less-than-ideal RH were a factor for a hobbyist, the plant and roots potentially drying out faster than on a solid mount would be a consideration. WhiteCat8
