Kangaroo paw

I planted some red & green kangaroo paw seeds at least 3 months ago. They've been sitting in a covered pot on a seed mat doing absolutely nothing. I have some other tropical seeds that I want to start and was going to toss the KP pot to make room. I was shocked to see that one had finally germinated! I'd heard that germination was spotty and took a while but really figured that after 3 months it was time to give up. I'm glad I didn't toss it earlier. Now that I have a seedling I should find out how to care for it.

That's fabulous! Isn't it awesome to see something finally "work" after almost giving up on it??! Now I have to look up kangaroo paw, it sounds interesting!

IÂm so glad you posted your results! I planted them last year and when they didnÂt come up (after 2 months) I tossed them. I bought more this year from the same person off e-bay
And IÂm trying it again. I just check my notes (I did more homework this year) and it can take them 12 weeks to germinate. I need patience!! The worst part is I just planted them March 4 so I donÂt think they can go out this year, if they grow. Please post how they do.

I just looked up Kangaroo Paw, what a neat plant! Where did you get your seeds? :)

I got mine in a trade from someone here but I don't remember who. I have no idea where they got them. I hope it grows. I'm going to keep it on the seed mat and put it outside in June (in a container) if it lives that long.

When I looked it up I read that the seeds could take 4 weeks but I had no way of knowing how fresh they were so I didn't toss them so fast. I'm glad I didn't. I have a number of seeds that have sporadic and/or long germination times and have a tendancy to forget about them. I have recycled soil before and had surprises growing in the containers, especially certain pipevines and passion flowers. I must have at least 10 pots of plants that have an extra plant growing with them.

well done karyn! kangaroo paw seeds (you mean the aussie native right?) are one of those plants that do much better with smoke treatment and it really increases the germination rate.

Trancegemini I wish that I would have known that before. Someone actually sent me a smoke disc (paper) for some other hard to germinate seeds that I have. Maybe I'll find some more KP and try them again. At least I have my one little seedling. I have no idea if it's the green or red variety.

You might have A. Manglesii the red and green one. they grew wild near my house where I grew up and the flowers are just stunning, almost like velvet. The reason they do better with smoke treatment is it's a natural part of their regeneration cycle so most of the seeds stay dormant until after a fire. If you can get smoke water, crystals or discs that would be the best way to go so you can break their dormancy. good luck with it, Im really interested to see how you go with it in your climate so keep us posted. :)

The seedling I have now will be kept in a container and taken into the greenhouse when the temps drop if it makes it that long. It wouldn't survive outside here Oct thru May. Unless I get more seeds it's too late to use the smoke treatment. I got the disc several months after I planted the KP seeds. I browse the Australian native plant forum occasionally. There are some amazing plants that grow there. One day I'd love to visit Australia and New Zealand.

yep we do have some lovely plants, but strangely some people over here dont like them and almost feel theyre common or not exotic enough, strange isnt it? I think it will do great in your greenhouse. they like good drainage so maybe just add some perlite into your potting soil when it gets potted up if you have some. good luck, Im just amazed you have a little seedling going because I know how tricky they are to germinate
