Something is eating our Holly bushes...

We have Hollies in several places in our yard and they have never been bothered by the occasional deer that we have in the neighborhood. However, we noticed this week that the Holly bushes we have planted next to the ravine that runs alongside our property in our back yard have been chewed almost to the ground. Not 10 feet away are 2 much larger hollies that have not been touched. Nor have the ones in our front yard where the deer travel when they come through the yard. The back yard is surrounded by fence - so we don't think it is deer. Last summer we noticed that the Sweetspire that we have along the ravine was also chewed almost to the ground.

All that being said we live in a very wooded area and we have lots and lots of squirrels and squirrel nests. My question is ... do squirrels do this kind of damage???
