mulch, pine straw, or pine bark

We are getting ready to landscape in front of the house. What is the best to put around shrubs....mulch, pine straw or pine bark? I'm from south GA, so I love the pine straw, but I'm wondering what is the best as to holding moisture, etc. Thanks for any help given.

I would say that pine straw is the better mulch, but may be more apt to caught by a breeze or catch fire than the bark. I use every available needle from my few white pines. I use a lot of redwood bark but I have to add to it every year. I have a lot of problems with ants that it harbors. I have tried numerous chemicals, but it is quite a challenge.

mulch is mulch is mulch ....

how any given mulch will work on your soil will only be known to you ...

all mulch will need annual care .... usually adding more in certain areas that it disappeared ...

i know people who use each of what you list ... all are good ..

bottom line... is your aesthetic.. and what you prefer ... what looks good to your eye ... and in my world .. which is the cheapest .... i personally have a more utilitarian view of mulch .. it has a job to do .. i don't really care about its look/texture ... my only caveat is color. .... go with a natural color ... stay away from 'colored' mulch ... it just isn't in harmony with ma nature IMHO .... but ..... if you like it.. go for it ....

    good luck

Pine straw will need to be replenished once or twice a year, as it tends to fade and disappear as it dies and turns brittle. If you use the pine bark, I think that the smaller nuggets look great and tend to stay put, whereas the larger nuggets float away in a heavy rain. But right now, we are using a mixed wood chip product from a local arborist who has a different kind of chipper. The chips are much smaller than is the norm. He dumps it and we let it age for a few months before applying it. It's our secret stash, lol!

I agree about the bright red mulch....it hurts my feelings to look at that stuff! ;-) But at least the blue mulch hasn't caught on in this area. Yikes!

another consideration is a mulch that doesn`t attract termites.

Yes, ants in a mulch pile could be good. They eat any present termites.
