I've ordered JG and SS for this spring. I'm planning on growing them on rebar teepees. I'll be watching this post closely.

I do grow TGC which seems to want to grow stiff and upright for me. It is relatively thornless. Min will be in its 4th spring this year, and I haven't seen a tendency for it to want to "arch" over?

Hi Pattie,
James Galway is a little stiff in my experience for using it as a climber to cover an arch. 'The Generous Gardener' is a better choice, it has slender canes and a much more luxuriant growth, so it would be easier for you to cover the arch and to have a dense plant in flower from the base to the top. St. Swithun is one of my favorite DA, also very good as a climber, but shorter than the Gardener ;o)

I agree that James Galway would be too stiff to treat as a climber. On the other hand, it makes a great free standing bush and has been the best Austin I have as far as disease resistance here.

In total agreement with the reports above. I will replace James Galway (which I lost to RRD) but I need a high windage place for it. I wouldn't want to try to direct JG to a form, his own is magnificent free standing.

A great, healthy rose with an amazing form - truly unique. I have mine growing on one side of an arbor, but our winter weather keeps him from growing more than 6' feet tall or so.

I loved Ann's so bought one last year.

Now I'm wondering if I've planted it in an area that will be too confined.

Basically, I lack enthusiam for the Austins, but I fell in love with James Galway.

Glad to hear these comments. I planted mine against a fence in full sun where he will have plenty of room to do his thing - I can already see that he will have stiff canes. Have seen some beautiful blooming photos.....cant wait to see spring flush!
