I just grow a mango I bought from the store. When I crack opened the husk the seed inside was already rooted. Buried it half in its edge ,hump side up in a loose soil pot, keep it moist , full sun. It sprouted within 5-7 days. Now I have 3-4 tiny leaves ,red purple color. Good luck.

Like Shawna, I purchased a mango and a coconut to try. The mango, was very ripe and the seed had already started to grow when I was removing it from the husk. Within a few days I had a plant sprouting and is doing well. My coconut was another story, dud and I suspect your seed was too.

I've killed alot of things lately, certainly not a green thumb by no means.....maybe if you purchased a ripe one from a local market you'd have better luck.

The only thing I can think of is maybe you're planting it too deep?

I've included what my seed looked like when I cracked open the husk, hope this helps. Couldn't find a recent photo of my plants but after a month it probably has 10 leaves if my memory serves me right.

Can part of that seed grow a mango/ must it be whole?

some mango seeds will grow from only part of the seed (may have 5 to 6 seed-cores) . others need the whole seed intact. it depends on the variety.

In the O.P. the seed may be planted too deep. i would remove some of the soil from the top, so the sun can hit just a tiny bit of the top-most-part of the seed.

mango seeds should not be planted more than 1 inch deep. and lay on its side. (they lay flat in nature)

Hi, I got 2 seeds out of mango from the groceries store. Kept them moist in a ziplock surrounded by a wet tissue for 7 days. Afterwards when they formed a root I moved them to potting soil. One of them grew a plant but the other didn't. About 2 weeks later I inspected the one that didn't and found that it had three thick roots so I put it back gently making sure I don't ruin the roots and covered it with soil. I will try following the suggestions here of keeping the soil depth above the seed thin and also give it enough sunlight. Hopefully this does the trick. I just wanted to show you the one that did plant through this picture here. It's beautiful.
