Growing from Seed

Lavender Seed

My daughter just moved to a rental house which has what looks to me to be a hedge of spanish lavender across the front lawn and it is covered with seed heads. I picked some of the seed and would like to start new plants from them but I'm not sure what the proper treatment of them would be. Do they need a cold spell to germinate? Or would they grow from seed and how long would it take for them to germinate? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Fresh lavender seed often germinates best at 55 - 65F with germination taking anywhere from 21-90 days. Germination is erratic, meaning not all seedlings appear at the same time.

If you hang on to and store the seeds to sow them later - Clothiers:
Lavandula angustifolia , laciniata, latifolia, and stoechas, Sow at 68ºF, if no germination in 3-4 wks, move to 24-39ºF for 2-4 wks

Morz, thanks for the information. I will wait and sow them this winter. It's too hot here now.

Al, how do you root lavender cuttings? I took two little cuttings and I have them in water right now.
