Hello again!

Bit of a blast from the past this is :) I used to be a GW addict back in the day, for about 3-4 years. Got tons of advice, posted like crazy and made a lot of friends. My handle back then was 'thebordercollie'.

Then my circumstances changed. My beloved border collie died and I didn't garden for almost a year. Then, my husband and I decided to demolish our old house and build a brand new one on the same lot so I dug up some established roses, gave them away for free... but my garden was totally destroyed. 35 roses and many perenennials and bulbs... gone.

We moved into our new house a year ago and the completely blank backyard was very overwhelming plus my hands were full so I didn't garden at all. I used to lurk at GW sometimes but seeing photos of established rosebeds and massive OGRs used to make me feel even more sad so I'd keep putting off gardening.....

But now I'm taking the plunge again. I got a new bed dug in the backyard (gets full sun) and ordered some 11 roses from Rose Fire/Chamblees/ARE. I have ordered:

Blanc Double de Coubert

Rose de Rescht

Autumn Damask

Maggie

Abe Darby

Heritage

Jude the Obscure

Graham Thomas

Baron Girod de l'Ain

Honorine de Brabant

Rose Perfume de l'Hay :-D

I am excited. Decided to also rejoin GW. I made a new account because I'm like a newbie now with zero plants in the ground :) Hopefully I have learned something from my old mistakes and will plan my garden better this time around.

Anyway, just wanted to say Hello to all of you and hope I can again become a part of the GW Antique Rose and Rose forums! :D

I'm jealous. I never seem to learn from my gardening mistakes. I guess I'm just that stubborn.

I also took a hiatus from gardening and am now back. It's taking me much longer to get things done, but I guess I need to learn some patience.

Keep it up. We'll both get back there.

Hi! And welcome. I probably wasn't posting back when you were before, but I used to have a sheltie, and absolutely loved that dog. Sorry about your collie.

Congratulations on your new home. I can understand your reluctance to start a new garden when you had a beautiful one before. But once you get started again, you will feel the magic. :) And you're not a newbie - you have gardening experience! Can't wait to see what beauty you create with your blank canvas!

Welcome back! I think you're going to be surprised at how quickly the roses start to look interesting, and how much fun it is to see them grow and flourish. Your selection sounds really great for your area and before you know it you'll have beautiful color in your garden again.

Welcome back. I've also been establishing since last year new flower beds. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed. But then they start to bloom and it feels good.
Interestingly this year I ordered 3 of the roses that you did: Rose de Reiche, Abe Darby, and Autumn Damask. Hope we're both successful.
Here's to garden jewelry...better known as roses.

    Welcome Back..

Ive moved, so kinda started all over a year ago, though I brought some of my roses with me, not all of them though.

Youve made some nice choices.. have you grown any of these before?

Dont forget the rogosas will sucker if they are on own root and they will get fairly big, so dont pack them in tight with the others.. If they are on rootstock, they will still get fairly big, they also will not like the fertilizer the others will demand. The austins will need to be sprayed to keep free of BS, Im not sure about your area, how Black Spot prevelant is it there.

BTW for companion plants, go check out WINTERSOWING forum.. If you have never wintersown .. it will change your garden habits tremendously.. you can sow thousands of companion plants in a couple years time.. =).. for pennies on the dollar compared buying them at the nusery.

I find this important so I have more to spend on both roses and daylily seeds.. Both of which will wipe out most of my yearly garden budget together.

Rose De Rescht.. I find it fairly hardy as its 7 years old.. will not get big for me though as it dies about half way down each year. Can get damask crud, but its bright, its early, it has lovely damask fragrance and can put on a few good blushes in a season.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! :)

Jeannie : I've grown RdR and Autumn Damask in my old garden and they did very well for me. Abe surprisingly attained a lot of height and was very healthy despite the fact that I do not spray.

Silverkelt : I've grown all except Baron, Maggie, Honorine and Rose Perfume de l'Hay. I love rugosas as they are so hardy and fabulous in this area. I only buy own root. My RdR threw out 2 baby plants when I grew her so I expect she'll do the same. Your RdR photo is amazing.

I intend to mix in all my roses together because I don't spray. My roses tend not to get BS here. Maybe it's our climate or my cultivation but even the Austins I grew never got BS... don't know why, not that I'm complaining. A much bigger problem for me is those horrible, evil Japanese Beetles.

I have wintersown before! Had great success with nigella and poppy, although none at all with cosmos.

Isn't it interesting how life changes and we find our way back to what we love?
