Hamelia patens? Yes, roots from softwood cuttings, or so I've read. I don't have any real personal experience, bought a small one once at an exotic plant nursery to grow as an annual and it died in about 2 weeks.

I know about H. patens var patens.
and about H. patens var glabra.
There also are compact cultivars of each.

Years ago I bought two compact H. p. var glabra.
The originals grew very little in two years, ultimately died.
I have offsprings of them, grown from cuttings.

Maybe one cutting in thirty gets roots.

Rooted cuttings may survive for a long time;
three out of four of them ultimately die.

One or two years pass before growth of the part above soil,
growth then is excruciatingly slow.

My yied now is two tall, wide, productive bushes,
and fourteen in the excruciating stage.

crikey ... in MI.. it could be the invasive Euonymus alatus .. common names suck ....

we need a full ID ... and OP to use the latin ..

to insure we are talking about the right plant
