Fungus

On a wander up the back hill behind my Aunt's property, I found this and couldn't resist a picture of it. Does anyone happen to know what the name of it is? :)

Thanks for looking!

Looks like some sort of shelf fungus. Do you know what the genus and or species of tree on which it occurred might be?

Or the kind of tree bark in which it grew? Was this growing in mulch?

Sorry Horster, it was on the ground growing in the litter alongside a stand of trees but I don't know what type. I couldn't even begin to tell you what trees were beside it. I didn't capture any images of the trees around there. Eucalyptus was one type, but I'm unsure of any of the others there. Sorry! :)

No way to try and narrow it down then. Pretty shelf fungus, anyway.

This may be a long shot, but I was thumbing through a reference book and came across similar looking "chicken-of the woods," Laetiporus sulphureus. You might compare to that...

Nope, it didn't have the darker orangish color on the other side, it was white on the back side of it. Pretty much looked the same on the opposite side as what you see on the side you can see. Strange thing was, it was growing up from the ground, in litter on the ground. Truly no big deal though horster, just was curious if anyone knew. :D

the rings on it remind me of a fungus i know as "turkey tail" this is a fungus that aids the decay of wood and can be found on almost any tree stump, only ever on dead wood though. Could there have been a dead root in the ground where it was sprouting from? or a large branch?

the only thing that puts me off this is the lack of colour, though I'm sure albino forms will exist.. also what size was it? nothing to scale it to here..

might give you a point to start looking though :)

I don't believe it to be turkey tail, which is a beautiful little mushroom often found on dead hardwood. I had some develop on some of our well-seasoned firewood last year! I'll attach a google images page so you can see some of the variations. Turkey tail mushrooms really look like their namesake, as you can see!

Yeah, it isn't turkey tail. Hm, size of this fungus... about the size of my palm. Which at a rough guess is about 4" long from wrist to fingers and about 3" from edge to edge of my hand. Of course, the fungus was a bit taller, but the main mass of it, the size of my palm.

It grew on/in the litter on the ground, below trees alongside a footpath up a hill in Southern California. I think the majority of trees in the area were Eucalyptus. But there were others as well. If you went through my photobucket album with the fungi picture, within that album is a seed pod that I took a picture of, the leaf litter there is also what can be found on that hillside.

Thank you so much for trying so hard to figure out what this little bugger is. :)
