has anyone had any experience pruning the lilac 'superba' (s. microphylla 'superba)?

when pruning i like to remove just the flower portion while not removing any woody sections of the shrub. with 'superba' the tiny flowers grow around the stem making pruning in this manner all but impossible. any suggestions? thanks.
