pavers over concrete sidewalk

I'm planning on mortaring pavers over my existing sidewalk. I recently raised and leveled all of the slabs as the entire sidewalk was channeling water to the house. I'm wondering if it would be advisable to fasten each slab end together with some kind of metal straps before laying down the mortar? I'm hoping if the sidewalk sections move they would at least move together.
