Fragrance not strong, nor is shrub. Will probably need a warm nook in your zone. Definitely an enthusiast's plant, rather than a garden standard with general appeal.

I agree that this plant will probably never be popular. I got it because I wanted Winter or earliest Spring flowers. I am training it in tree form. It branches in candelabra fashion. Mine formed silver buds that lasted until February and were blasted by the cold. A distinctive plant. The only other living one I saw was indoors in March at Longwood Gardens and it's blooms were underwhelming. The species chrysantha is supposedly much more dependable than the one, I think, is species papyfera.
I am actually looking for a rare sort called Edgeworthia chrysantha'Red Dragon', that has orange-scarlet flowers.
Have hopes mine will get through next Winter and bloom.

Red Dragon is considerably less fragrant than the type, and less vigorous.

My Edgeworthia brings joy throughout the year. Now in cold January, in Durham, North Carolina, it is blooming beautifully and even with no leaves at all, is perfection. There are camellias blooming occasionally in my yard and Lenten Roses may appear one of these days but in this gloomy wintry period, I can absolutely count on the glorious Edgeworthia. Mine was a present from a fine young man just before he returned to his home in Mexico saying in his yard there was no good place for it. He brought it four summers ago and planted it for me on a hillside under a small tree. By today, it has grown exponentially (!) multiplying itself month by month. Most of the year it has graceful, smooth, silvery leaves on its substantial, sculptural branches. My neighbors, Lucy and Babs, have a sturdy old one six times the size of mine bursting with flowers. Theirs is up against their house partially shaded by their wall.
