This could be the rose you are looking for but I don't think the colour is as you describe:
ÂMme Edouard Herriot this variety was raised in France in 1920, it was shown at the Daily Mail Exhibition in London in 1922 under the name ÂDaily Mail and quickly became the most popular rose of its day in the UK, since then it has all but disappeared.
We have an old specimen planted against a wall in Dunrobin Castle Garden in 1926. It has orange/pink blooms which fade to shell pink with age, a crowded, angular, old-fashioned rose flower form and a sweet tea-rose scent. It is classified as an early hybrid tea climber. Unfortunately it is a martyr to black spot disease.

Thank you for that information, Sutherland Gardener. I see it is a pernetiana. I will not pine for it knowing that it would probably not do well in my normally humid climate, but I can dream of it anyway. Beautiful rose, Mme Edouard Herriot.

Thank you, Sutherland, for your reply and information. I looked up Mme. Edouard Herriot on www.helpmefind.com/roses and compared that rose to the rose named Daily Mail Scented Rose. I don't think they are the same rose. Mme. Herriot won an award in 1922, but Daily Mail Scented Rose was not bred until 1927, by William ARcher and daughter. It was also a very popular rose in the UK if not the most popular rose for awhile. It is said to have a damask fragrance. Also in all the pictures I've seen of it it is a deep garnet red.
It is unavailable in the US and the nursery I wrote to in Australia didn't reply to me. Oh well, there are other fine reds..I ended up ordering a Fields of the Woods. But I would still love to find one.

Hi, did you ever find a supplier - I remember my granddad had loads of these in his back garden when I was 6 or 7 - this would have been in the early 1970’s - he planted them in the 1930’s - they were lovely and I’ve been looking for them for a long time and have only just discovered their name!

I think DMSR is available in Australia and Germany only, according to Help Me Find roses website. A similar dark blackish red rose with scent is Black Lady. If you get on the mailing list at Heirloom Roses you will get an email when its back in stock. Another Black-red, scented is Deep Secret. Queen Bee is another fragrant dark red that is winter hardy and in stock.
