DW grows cucumbers in chain link with no apparent problems.

Morning glories are beautiful on chain-link fences. I do it every year. It's a little hard to get the dried-up vines off the fence in the fall. The seeds scatter all over the place and in the spring you have a lot of seedlings to pull (or you have morning glory beds "only" for days-LOL).

: ) if one MUST have fences, I think they are best put to use- ideally buried under plants. climbing peas, cukes, pole beans, morning glories...trumpet vine, autumn clematis... I picked this opinion up from a lady who grew cantalopes on hers- with little hammocks made from old mesh bags (like the ones oranges come in) for the maturing melons :)

I agree with that. Chain link fences are ugly without 'decoration'. Around here they are usually covered with ivy or morning glories.

I plant clematis to grow on my chain link fence. I also add fence "jewelry," beads, crystals, bits of glass here and there to liven up the area before the plants grow.
