I moved a few clumps about 2 weeks ago; they haven't shown any stress at all. Take as big a root ball that you can; that's probably what helped me.

I try to move only the little seedlings that pop up in spring.

Now. They will transplant better when young and taproot is small-and yes do take a good clump of soil when you do.

I have grown some columbine from seed, indoors. Now that I have transplanted the seedlings to 4 inch pots, all the seedling leaves (about 3 per plant) have turned from green to dark purple. Otherwise, they look fine. Does anyone know what causes this, and if I should be worried about it?

I recently transplanted full size columbine plants without problems.
Jubilee363, if your plants are in a cool area, the purple discoloration may be due to phosphorous deficiency. It should straighten out as it warms up.
