Question about cotton bolls.

I'm wanting to grow cotton but don't want to have to keep replanting it each year. Temperature is not an issue; I can bring the plant inside over the winter.

My question is about harvesting the bolls. I've heard that you have to kill the plant and wait for the bolls to dry and split open. Is it possible for me to simply pick the boll and set it aside to dry and split? I'd prefer this method as it allows the plant to be the perennial that it is as opposed to the annual that farmers have made it.
