moving cosmos seedlings

I have a LOT of these cosmos seedlings with two leaves each that i have to MOVE to a different spot.

(I sowed them in a place where it doesn't get too much sunlight and I didn't know they are the type that get leggy trying to reach for the sun)

SO I want to know if theres any thing i should know BEFORE doing this.. Any methods in moving these seedlings so that the root doesnt get damaged or the stem doesnt get damaged.. Just to let you know, the soil it is in is kind of soggy and claylike.. not fluffy at all. it doesn't move around easily. so I will have to dig into the soil instead of pulliing it out by the leaves/stem.

please help me! I would hate to rip them out and watch them die in their new spot. :(
