Glad to meet another member of the herd! I have chain link surrounding most of my property too. I like to grow a variety of Morning Glories up the fence. I haven't tried growing them on the north side but they will be just fine elsewhere.

Morning Glories are great for chain link because they grow fast and have beautiful continuous bloom until frost. Caring for MG's is easy, just keep them moist and they'll do the rest!

Be sure to start the seeds in a container, or they'll just be a squirrel snack.

Couple of woody vines come to mind, honeysuckle and trumpet vine. Both would require serious trimming about once a year.

I have Jackmanii clematis growing on all sides of my chain link except the west (lilacs there). Once established, there's not too much maintenance involved. And if there's supposed to be, I don't do it and they grow fine.
