Not sure how big your garden is, but you could build a temporary "fence" with poles and landscape fabric. Only needs to be about 3 feet or so high I would think. That should block the worst of the wind. Put poles in ground, wrap fabric around outside of poles, and staple fabric to poles. End of the year just pull out stakes and role up fabric and stakes together for storage.

Are you new to the prairie? Didn't you ever hear of a "windbreak"?
It's long been the custom for farmsteads to have a row of trees planted to protect the house and buildings from the prevaling winds....in some places 2 are necessary...one of big trees and a smaller one of arborvitae closer to the house.
Plant some trees and put up some fencing in the meanwhile.....snow fence is cheap and servicable.....and temporary.

Hi - Where are you from in NE? I "grew-up" in NE and but I now live in South Central South Dakota... We too have WIND!!! YUCK!! It is a constant battle day after day!! Dries everything out, breaks stuff off, our trees in our front yard even lean when the wind doesn't blow!!! Wind breaks... ha ha ha... the wind doesn't ALWAYS come from the same direction... we have cedar trees all along the south side of our yard and that does help some but that doesn't protect our front or side yard at all...
