killing st johns wart

I have a big patch of st. johns wart that I want to kill. It is between a fence with old established grapes on and grass. My dog has full run of the yard so I don't want to use chemicals. (they don't work anyway.) Also I just had back surgery and really don't want to dig the stuff up. Can I cover it with plastic for a couple of months? Black or clear? Will it matter if the drip waters it under the plastic? ( i can't turn it off.) OR, can I plant some bushes I'm thinking roses and cottage garden type flowers in the middle of it and hope they squeeze it out? Does it have any companion plants?? Any thoughts??
