Earwigs generally eat decaying plant debris and tend to keep things tidy in the garden. They may be forgiven for chewing on the odd zinnia.

However, once in a while populations seem to explode and they become a pest. This seems to be such a year, judging by these forums and what I've head among my gardening friends. I remember the last time, I think it was 2002, when we had earwig problems like this.
While there are remedies, commercial and home-made, that can mitigate some problems, I think the best thing we can do is to endure the onslaught and know that next year will be better :)

You could try powdering some diatomaceous earth onto the soil of your plants but I have my doubts about that magic bullet. It doesn't even seem to be working on the ant infestation in the garden.

Anything you spray with will wash off with the next rain. How often do you visit this cemetery?

I know this is a bit late but if you aren't wholly opposed to insecticides, Bayer makes one that you can sprinkle into the ground.

I don't use them very much but when it's a choice between the bugs eating my plants entirely and using something, I'll use something. I really, really, really hate earwigs too and one cemetery has a big issue with them.

I visit the cemetery every week. How many days I visit depends mostly on the amount of rain we have. Obviously, when there is not enough rain and it is high summer I stop by every other day to water. The problem is over now though. the earwings have moved on I guess. I was looking for a solution because this happens every year though some years are worse than others, this being one of them. Because the flowers are in pots it poses a special problem. I like the flowers I buy to look good and not all brown and chewed up and these bugs are voracious. What is the Bayer product you mentioned called?
