There is only one book I have ever encouraged gardeners to read, "Plowman's Folly" by Edward Faulkner. I think it should be required reading for every gardener, farmer, horticulturist, agronomist, in fact anyone who eats. (That shouldn't leave out too many people!)
What the author basically says is that there is no such thing as "soil types." He says it's only because of man's abuse of soil that we can distinguish "types." If you can tell your soil is "sandy" or "clayey," it's a sure indication that it has little organic matter.
Also, soil tests are a total scam, a tragic waste of money. No matter what they reveal, what nutrients might be in short supply, the solution is always the same- add more organic matter to the soil! So why spend money when you know what you need to do?
I say forget about the tests and soil types. Just add organic matter to your garden, year after year, decade after decade. You know you constantly read "feed your soil and it will feed your plants" in the literature. Well, soils "eats" organic matter.
Dump your grass clippings, leaves, kitchen scraps, and crop residues at the end of the year in your garden and soi type and fertility will be cocerns of the past.

Well, I must disagree with Tyrell. It definitely does matter what type/texture of soil you have, and it isn't only a matter of low in Organic Matter (OM). There is a great book out that is easy to read, called The Soul of Soil. Joe Smillie and Grace Gershuny read it this winter.
You can do a ribbon test to find out a rough guessimate of your soil type/texture. there is also the jar method. I will post more on that when I get a few more minutes, but it too is easy and will give you a basic idea of your soil type/texture. Certain types of soil (clay) will bind nutrients much beeter than sandy soil which acts like a sieve. True OM is very important, but you can have 3-5% OM and still have a nutrient deficiency.
