I like your idea. Last spring I fixed a shade area for transplants using a hinged dog panel fence, two garden stakes, two old sheets and some clip type clothes pins. I set the dog panel fence up in a zig zag fashion so it wouldn't fall over. Pushed the garden stakes into the ground across from the dog fence and used the sheets and clothes pins to create a shade tent affair. Worked real well for me and I used what I had on hand like you did. It's true that "Necessity is the Mother of invention".
