Looks like Aplectrum hyemale. Unfortunate that it was dug up.

Wow what a find! No worries, I've got a whole bunch of them...won't dig another.

Could also be a Corallorhiza - those are more common than the Aplectrum hyemale which is particularly rare, esp. in New England.

Common names for Aplectrum hyemale are Adam and Eve, putty orchids, or putty root ... there are usually two of those corms although it can range from 1-4. They are protected in Massachusetts (I was born there and lived there for most of my life.) The flower spikes appear in spring and you really need to know where to look for them. That leaf develops in fall, stays alive under the snow, and continues to nourish the corms and developing flower spike in the spring.

Keep an eye out in the spring in that area for a bloom spike. The spike should poke up through the leaf litter with no apparent leaf structure which is usually still under the leaf litter. It dies after the bloom and remains dormant all summer, then sends up another leaf in the spring. When you see the flower, photo and post.... it can be more definitively ID'd then.

If you live in Massachusetts, contact the Mass. Wildflower Society as they would be very interested to see this.

bmjim-- I urge you to bring a camera with you on future hikes and take a picture of any plants you are wondering about there. Many wildflowers are rare and struggling for survival so it's best not to pick parts or uproot them for identification. It's just part of being a good steward of our wild places. Many thanks! :)

Corallorhiza don't produce leaves like that. They are mostly parasites with leaves reduced to scales. Aplectrum hyemale is called Adam and Eve in reference to the two corms that are usually present as seen in the OP.
