Should be sending up new canes from the bottom, to make a wider plant. Try to figure out why it isn't before trying to force it to branch by whacking it down. There may be an issue that needs to be addressed, which when corrected will result in more growth and more branching. Crowded? Shady? Root problems, like root rot or honey fungus?

I planted 4 Nanyberries in summer 2006. Although they are healthy and produce flowers. They were not very showy. Also, the leaves looked droopy all the time.

I planted mine more for the fruit since I like feeding the birds. Well, the birds didn't eat the fruit and I don't blame them. Its not very tasty in my opinion.

I'm giving mine another season to impress me. If not, they're coming out!

bboy-we have clay soil but we amended with triple mix when we planted everything. Everything in that area is doing quite well, especially the Pagoda Dogwood. Since I'm planting up a large area, nothing is crowded. The garden is also in full sun. I forgot to mention that the leaves, as jasper60103 stated, were droopy. I contributed that to the strong sun it gets.
jasper60103 - I am thinking of replacing mine with another Pagoda dogwood since they are both doing very well. Besides being a beautiful shrub, the birds seem to like the dogwoods. I also planted Serviceberry bushes which the birds love.

Do the nannyberry berries end up dropping & staining paver stones OR does the bird attraction cause feces staining the stone? We want to put one as a privacy shield next to our deck and patio furniture but our worried about this. thanks!
