The shifter for the tiller may be broken or a weld securing the mid shaft sprocket to the shaft may have let go. Either way, the chain case need to come apart. It is a fairly involved job.

Chain case is open. No big deal- just a little grimy. The shifter has splayed apart so it was slipping over the clutch collar- crappy design. The part number has changed so I hope the new one is a little stronger. Thanks for the tip about the sprocket - I'll check that too before I close the case up again. I've got the part on order from Vancouver through my local repair shop (I'm on the island)- I wouldn't by any chance have ordered from you?

LOL, I did not realize you are a neighbor. The shop would have ordered it from the same parts distributor we use.

I have an MTD rear tine roto-tiller and had an issue with my tines disengaging with the slightest bit of resistance. I pulled the transmission gear box assembly apart and found that one gear, shown in the attached photo, and indicated with an arrow had a key slot that was badly worn. This was allowing the tines to disengage. I took it apart and flipped the gear over as the other side of the gear keyway was fine. I put everything back together as shown in the photo and it runs fine now.
