Triumph Elm Tree Pruning Question

I have a Triumph Elm tree which was planted 2 years ago and has started to add some girth and height. The problem is is that the leader is growing off at an angle and the tree has a crotch that is fairly low. It looks nice now, but i want it to be healthy and strong in the future. Therefore, I think the lower side branch needs to eventually come off, but it might look funky. When should I do this if at all? Years from now? Or sooner? Also, i pruned the current leader shorter, in hopes that a more centrally located and taller one will take over and the tree won't grow off the the side as much. Was this the right thing to do? Or what can I do to to make it grow taller and less sideways? Any help on this matter would be great.

The green in the picture is the current leader. The red X is the branch I'm thinking about cutting off sometime. It might look silly though.
