Troy Bilt Super Tomahawk Chipper/Shredder
Hi,
I recently bought a Super Tomahawk Chipper/Shredder that had been sitting for awhile. From the engine number I think it's a '91 It was missing a belt but someone had written Napa Belt #5L290W on the side with a black marker. Luckily one of the Napa stores in my area carried the green FHP heavy duty belt which works like it should.
My problem is with the recoil assy/starter-rewind on the 8 HP Briggs And Straton I/C engine. Many times it fails to catch when I pull the cord to turn the engine for starting. I've sprayed the rewind with silicon spray lube and I've tapped the starter-rewind on the engine with a plastic hammer which manages to work when I need to start the engine. After inquiry with a local garden engine shop they thought I could replace the part with a new recoil rewind-starter assy with B&S PN #390391, but they weren't sure. If I special order it I keep it.
Has anyone else replaced the rewind assy on their chipper with this part? My chipper rewind-starter bolts onto the fan using screw holes. I have an Homelite generator with the same engine on it but the rewind-starter assy is not bolted on, it's welded on the fan housing. I haven't checked the engine numbers on the generator with my chippers' engine numbers. The fan housing on my generator also fits my chipper and starts the chipper engine.
Is this a common problem with these engines?
Unfortunately the Super Tomahawk chipper parts list on partsandservice.com does not list engines or engine part numbers. Any help is appreciated and would sure save my arm!
Raph
