WD-40 is not really a lubricant. In my opinion it has its uses, but this isn't one of them.

What you want to use is a silicon based dry lubricant. There is some stuff in a yellow can called GDL wehich ironically stands for....Garage Door Lube. You can get it at home depot, lowes or any good local hardware store. It is great stuff and has lots of other uses and does not attract dirt and dust.

Using a small amount, I apply 30 weight auto oil on hinges, ball bearings and "axles" of the rollers inside the tracks. If it starts to drip, I remove some. A light application of heavy duty chassis/bearing grease on the overhead track. If a chain drive, smear the grease lightly along the chain. I do this twice a year. Before the new coating of grease, I wipe away most of the old stuff as it probably has accumulated dirt as mentioned by peterc38.

Don't grease the chain. It has enough lubricant from the factory to last its entire life. It is not out in the elements.

Penetrating oil has worked well for me and my customers for years. frequency is more important than product, up to a point, IMHO.

Oil hardware on onepiece doors, or use a needl eadapter ona greae gunif the hardware has points for it to be greased..
