John Deere STX starter issues

I have a JD STX30 that will not start unless I rotate the flywheel/crank to a certain position by hand while the key is in the start position. It then starts like a champ and runs strong as always. Clueless?!?!

Is the solenoid clicking and trying to start?
IF so AND IF it's a Briggs OHV engine, adjust the valves.

Edit-
Apparently these have a Kohler, so describe what happens when it doesn't crank.
IF the starter just spins, the ring gear on the fly wheel is bad.
