Hatchet Blade Flew Off!

I was chopping down a sapling that's grown through (and back through and back through) a chainlink fence on the property I've just moved into and 15 minutes into the job the blade flew off (and over my neighbor's fence). I've fetched it back but I don't know how to get it back on or if I should just return it to the hardware store and get another.

I tried to force it, but it doesn't want to go. It's been humid...should I wait for a dry day? Is this normal?
