Craftsman mower

I have a craftsman mower with the 17.5 horse engine its the 1750 model. After I mow with it for a little bit the engine will sputter and the mower deck will disengage momentarily and then will start back up. I have been told it could be the pto switch, possibly the ignition switch or the pto clutch. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any input they could give me for this problem any help would be greatly appreciated.

your prob description fits well with a faulty seat switch... or you are not keeping enuff keester weight on the switch for it to remain constantly engaged.

That definitely sounds like some type of electrical problem. Momentary lack of electrical power causes the PTO to release and the engine to loose spark and sputter. Have you checked for a loose battery connection or faulty battery?

I'm not sure why a faulty PTO switch would cause the engine to sputter, or a faulty PTO clutch for that matter. Have you tried riding the mower around a bit with the PTO off to see if it still sputters?

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you guys and thanks for the ideas. I have got the mower fixed now and it was a mixed bag of problems. The fuel tank had some sediment in it that was cloggin the fuel filter which caused the sputter. New filter and clean out the tank and she runs like a top now. The pto switch had a wire with most of the strands in it broke so the switch was coming on and off and it all just happen to be goin on all at once.
