Charleney, The active ingredient in Messenger was something called harpin protein. I've read that the only product containing harpin that's now available to the home gardener is Green Guard. I've not tried it, but here's a link . . .

Is Harp-N-Tek available for home use?

SO Henry:WOULD YOU USE IT?

I have used Harpin in the past with my rose seeds. I did not do controlled tests so I cannot say if it helped or not. In the future (when I run out of Harpin) I will probably use aspirin.

I have heard on NPR "you bet your garden" to make compost tea and then strain it , then spray it.
Has anyone tried this?

Henry Kuska,

Which of the products containing harpin have you been using?

I use/used Messenger.

Thanks Henry for the aspirin tip. I'm going to try it.
