2001 Simplicity Broadmoor

Hello. I have spark at the spark plug, air cleaner off, and fuel to the 16hp Kohler engine. But all it will do is backfire through the carb. I took the flywheel off and the shear key is fine. It has been hard starting all spring and now nothing. Any ideas?
