A drip irrigation system is always good in that it saves water and places water precisely where you want it to go. I would not use the system to irrigate turf but only because it gets 'choked up' by the runners and roots of the grass. I am talking about a single instance of its use in St Augustine turf.
I would buy the whole kit because it usually has all the important components and you will be unlikely to forget an essential item like the filter.
If it is your first attempt at installing any sprinkler system, go to a source where you stand a chance of getting face to face help. Many times I have been in 'Home Depot' and have been helped through a project by other customers! This is not to say that the HD staff has not been helpful. As your confidence increases you will be able to shop where ever you wish.

Four years ago I built a drip system for a 2100 sq. ft. garden. I used Rainbird products acquired through their web site. At that time, they offered a consulting and design service (which I did not use. I did my own design.)

They still do have instruction manuals and guides at rainbird.com, but I don't see that they still offer design help.

I got everything I needed from them and an online purveyor of PVC connectors (sorry, I lost the bookmark for their site) to build a great system to totally automate my garden waterer system.)
