Need help spec'ing a PUMP

We have a Toro residential sprinkler design which has 16 zones, the largest of which consumes 13 gpm.

The water source is a shallow well (less than 30'). As for grade, the height difference betweeen the well head and highest sprinkler head is 15'. The longest run from the well head to one of three valve zones is between 150-200' with 1 1/4" pipe.

We would like help specifying a (jet) pump.

It has also been suggested we use a filter as we're in a sandy location.

Goulds make nice pumps. A regular shallow/centrifical pump rather than shallow jet will give you more gpm's so you could get by with less HP or perhaps run multiple zones at the same time.

You need to look at pump specs and then also know your depth to water so you could select a pump.

First a couple of questions. Do you already have a well pump,( perhaps for your household water supply )? You said your water source is less than 30 feet. Is this to the water level or to the proposed foot valve? Have you calculated for draw down? What type of back-flow prevention is required? Your sprinkler system has been designed, do you know the sprinkler system pressure required?

In any case, Goulds does manufacture good pumps ( we use them quite often ) as does Grundfos and others. These are commercial / industrial quality pumps and are not found at your 'do it yourself' stores. Just as well, 'do it yourself stores' do not have anyone qualified to help you.
Look in your yellow pages for pump providers and/or check with your irrigation ( spinkler ) supplier.
There may be several pumps that fit your requirments. Here is just one to consider. Goulds SJ series vertical jet pump. Note = If you install a filter, be sure it can handle the full flow required at 60% ( min ) clogged.
Here is a 'Guess-timate' on what you might need. Adjust the numbers to actual losses / suction lift.

    2.36 psi 200ft 1 1/4" pvc
7.0 psi 15' of elevation to highest head
13.0 psi 30' to suction inlet at foot valve
    1.5 psi foot valve
2.5 psi dual check valve ( back-flow preveneter
    5.0 psi filter ( at 60% clogged )
4.0 psi Isolation valves(2). Manual open / close valves
3.64 psi Remote control valve (solenoid controlled vale)
20.0 psi pressure required at the sprinkler head
4.0 psi misc. fittings, reducers, lateral lines, etc.

63.0 psi total system pressure required ???????
or about 145.5 feet of head.

If these numbers were "right on" you would need a pump that could produce 146 feet of head (63psi ) at a flow of 13gpm.

If looking at a performance chart it may look something like 50 psi at 13 gpm at a depth of 30 feet.

    I hope this helps
