It is really not necessary to water most shrubs from above .. in fact ... it could cause problems for many plants. Roots absorb water so irrigating the ground is much more water efficient then trying to spray over your tallest shrubs.

If your system was installed in the seventies .. ( I started installing systems in the late seventies ) ... I'll wager you would benafit from some water saving renovation.

I agree. Established shrubs in DFW don't need much more water than rainfall provides (except maybe for this year!). Consider trenching away from the house or shrub line, removing the risers in the bushes and installing underground pop-up heads in front of the shrubs that would address the flower beds (and the grass).
