Cost if Problem with Automatic Compression Release (ACR)

Craftsman Lawn Mower

Mower DYT 4000 Model No. 917.273640

How much trouble is it to replace yourself?, cost of part? Estimate as to what would Sears charge me if they came to the house?

IF this is a Briggs engine, I may have some info for you. I do not do look ups from mower numbers.

Couldn't this also relate to improperly adjusted valve lash?

    It's a Briggs 31P777.
You know, you could start off by giving a description of what the engine is doing instead of just presuming that "whatever you have been told" is actually true, and asking about the costs!!!!!
We have know idea what your engine is doing (or not doing), and we also have know idea what you have been told will "fix it".
But I will bet that we can get to a solution if you provide us with more info on your engine's problem.

Here is a link that might be useful: 917.273640

It's not my mower, It's mower I'm considering on buying if the price is right. I was told by the seller who just had it serviced 3 weeks ago and was told the Automatic Compression Release (ACR) was going. The mower is 5 years old.

That's all I really know about it. It is functional now and seems to run fine. I'm just wondering if worse case happens and it needs to be replaced a month or so after I get it.

The ACR can be a simple fix or the sign of larger problems. The ACR adds pressure to the exhaust valve to reduce compression for starting. The unit should not wear out as it is used at starting. What would concern me is if the valve has an issue rather than the ACR. That is a rebuild and is usually where customers opt for putting that cash to a new machine. As mownie said, you can't tell from a post.

Briggs compression release affects the INTAKE valve.

If we were talking about a low cost motor, I might balk at fixing a burned valve, but if everything else showed good with a leakdown test, I'd replace the valve.

Even with a good quality, small lawnmower flathead, I'd fix the valve.

"Briggs compression release affects the INTAKE valve."

Except on the Vanguard V twin.

I have sent him info that may help with his problem.

"Except on the Vanguard V twin."

"I do not do look ups from mower numbers."

Yes, that's why I posted this engine to be a 31P777.

"Yes, that's why I posted this engine to be a 31P777."

You don't think your first statement might be taken as a blanket statement covering ALL B&S Engines since there was no stipulation?

Oh, sorry Walt. I guess it could be misleading in that respect.
Probably would have been clearer if I had said "THIS Briggs' compression release affects the INTAKE valve."
