Getting mulch from a chipper

My father-in-law rented a chipper this weekend and I'm going to borrow it for a day to try and create some usable mulch out of a bunch of trees and limbs I've cleared and cut down.

My question is, how much wood chips can I expect to get from a pile of limbs and smaller trees that is about 3-4 tall and maybe 12-15 wide? Also, how long will something like that take?

I'm sure it depends on the tool but I'm hoping its a pretty serious one since he's renting it. Thanks.

You're gonna be amazed at how small a pile of chips you get from a huge pile of limbs!!!!

I figured that would be the case. Still, it will be worth my effort just to obliterate the piles I have laying around rather than just throwing them in a corner and letting them sit there. Thanks!

Don't get me wrong. I wasn't trying to discourage you. I have an MTD chipper and it just surprises me when I haul my minipickup load of branches to the chipper and when finished the miniscule pile of chips left. The wife really loves it for use in her shrub beds and whatever's left gets tilled into the vegie garden.

No, I appreciated the response. It makes sense though.

Part of the motivation behind that question was the fact that we're trying to figure out what to use as our path material. We just put the boundries and some of the first plants into our garden after I spent 6 months clearing everything.

We were thinking either crushed stone or wood chips. What's really amazing to me is how cheap the stone is. We have a place called The Stone Store and I can get a truck load (1 ton) of several different kinds of gravel/stone for only $100 bucks! We'll probably be going that way.
