Drainage decision

Sorry -- this might be long:

We bought out house last year - previous (only) owners had built little curbs around the crawlspace air vents (should have been a big clue). The back yard floods on heavy rain, which we have often in NW Florida, and turns the patio into a wading pool and threatens at my family room sliding glass door. Drainage was placed by previous owners (3 drains on patio) that go to a 4" pipe under a driveway and to the street. They can't handle the water -- they have been cleaned out. After Ivan destroyed trees and shrubs alike the problem is worse.

We've had two people look at the yard (have an appointment for a third) and have two different answers. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with either and could offer advice or questions that we should ask.

Option 1: Create a swell that would channel the water down one side of the property towards the street. (Our front yard has a slope at street level so that should help us).

Option 2: Install drains at the lowest part of the back yard (near the patio, but not near the house), use yard to direct water there and have it flow out to the front street level.

What are the inherent pit-falls in each? Any advice? Any thoughts on other questions I should ask?

Many thanks in advance!

JR
