Baronne Prevost, any opinions?

We are here at Biltmore in Asheville, NC. We just toured the house and gardens. They have an extensive rose garden. One rose stood out for DH, Baronne Prevost. Nice form and scent. Anytime I can get him to want a rose, I like to jump at it. But I don't remember hearing too much about this one.

I also saw rugarosas for the first time and fell in love, any recommendations on those?

As for the rose garden, all I can say is, someone needs to get out there with some pruners. GEEZ, could they at least cut off the dead stuff? And many of the beds are missing nameplates. The climbing roses were displayed very well, against the wall with wires. I also liked the coupolas and pillars, some good ideas. But too many HTs. I think this rose garden is more for cut flowers to bring inside than for strolling.

It's probably no help to you, but Baronne Prevost is one of the few Hybrid Perpetuals that is really excellent here in our coastal area of Southern Calif.

Baronne Prevost has lovely flowers but for me, it is a black spot magnet! I don't spray, and I feel it is a necessary thing for this rose...he does not live here anymore!

Beautiful flower form and color, outstanding fragrance. Best spring flush of any HP in my garden. An aggressively healthy shrub, a few good strong basals every year. Wicked thorns.

But I agree with Melva, tends to blackspot, which it passed on to the Comte de Chambord. And my nickname for her is Barren Prevost, since in the 4 years she has been in my garden (this will be her 5th) I have never seen any rebloom - not a single flower.

But I wouldn't be without her. And I also have the sport Ardoisee de Lyon and two seedlings, Caroline de Sansal and Panachee d'Orleans.

    B. Prevost is my most successful HP. It's only a two year old but healthy and floriferous.

HP's are obviously healthy and wonderful roses in California. Not so much in the south. They get blackspot and something I call brown crud even if you spray. I have several HP's even though they are not perfect for our area because the blooms are unbelievably beautiful and fragrant. If you can stand looking at the ratty foliage in late summer, you would love the blooms.

No, they're not healthy in this California garden: they are rust buckets par excellence. BP was the exception.

I agree. HPs don't much like it here---in this part of California at least. I've shovel-pruned most of mine, sniveling as I did so. BP is the exception.

my first summer with the Baron and his flowers are awesome. Yup, he does get spotty, but I am going to give him some more time in the hope that he will toughen up and outgrow it. he is in prime rose real estate, alongside a couple of Buck roses and Baroness Henriette de Snoy and Reines des Violettes... they'll be a gorgeous wall of roses when they grow!

Mine repeats, and does get black spot. I am sorry to say that I confuse it with Frederick Mistral. I have them together, and must stake them since they are so tall. I pulled out one that died last fall, and so only have one left, but do think it is pretty. I am going to pay more attention to the rebloom this year.

Thanks for the input. I do spray so I'll give him (or is is her?) a try.

Her. Baronne is fran-say for baroness, ie the wife of a baron.

The baroness is a wicked witch that smells and looks heavenly when she is good, but like Paris Hilton, she gets down and dirty, and bare. I bet she smells better than Paris, but I am thinking about jailing her as well with her son, the Count who also has inherited his mother's traits for all those nasty STDs but a handsome, fragrant lad when he is good.

Yes, HPs are in general poor choices -- at least for MY part of Southern California. I've learned to avoid 'em like the plague. Baronne Prevost is the rare exception which does really well here.

My Baronne Prevost is not that great. Not very fragrant, doesn't repeat very well and looks kinda sick after 4 years. As for rugosas, look at the Pavement series from Germany. For a small, well mannered rugosa try Marie Bugnet (Not Therese).

Nice enough rose for fragrance never thought of it as being a very healthy rose though not a big fan of most HP's . I love many rugossas but I'm not sure about the south they sure love the north though and cannot take any spraying they will drop their leaves. Favorite is Sarah Van Fleet which can get quite large also love plain old Rugossa rubra what a fragrance. The big favorite of the rugossas is Bland Double de Courbet which become cripsy kleenex here in a flash. Rugossas crisp in the heat here can't imagine how they would be in Georgia!

Frau Dagmar Hartoop is a beautiful, healthy rugosa that does great in my Marietta garden. No spray, fragrant and pretty pink flowers.

Thanks donna, nice to hear from a neighbor!

pat, you crack me up! So the Comte is the son of the Baronne? My husbands nickname for the Comte (first year in our yard) is the French Who-- (because of the smell). He'll be thrilled to have the momma as well.

I'm fascinated by the rose petal jam, but not having commented on Houzz in many years, I cannot see how to tag the name Meredith Miller. I will hope you are monitoring this topic! Because I'd love to try your jam recipe.

Aloha and thanks! 🌺 If you'd prefer to message it to me, I figured out how to allow messages (this site has changed a lot! https://www.houzz.com/settingsAdvanced ) ...or if you were comfortable posting it here, that would be great too! 🙂 Looking forward to blooms from my own Baronne Prevost, hopefully, this year.
