Yes, it is exterior length. BTW, NAPAs filters are made by WIX. To find the NAPA part number, put the B&S or Kohler part number into the non-NAPA part number box on the home page of NAPA online.

If you put a filter name/number in google you will get some hits. These are usually accompanied by other manufacturers #'s..you can them use them to find others.
manufacturers website cross reference charts are also helpful.

Ebay also helped me out with this..my deere dealer went from 4.25 to 6.50 to 9.20 since I bought my tractor a few years ago. I was able to score a 1/2 dozen on ebay for 5.25 ea. shipped to my house.

Tried to get a replacement filter at both Walmart and Pepboys - none available, so I am back where I started. The specific filters I was looking for are Purolator L35310, AC PF2210, or Fram 8172 (to replace Kohler 1205001). Are these some type of odd size? They are available by mail order, but that's what I was hoping to avoid. Any ideas?

The 2.3" and 2.7" are small engine size. The 3.4" is an automotive size.

If you can fit the 3.4" tall filter, buy that one. It's readily avaialable at almost any store that sells filters.

If you can't remember the part number, search for an oil filter for a Yugo. It's easy to remember that one.

Well I have used them mostly for about 50 years. You got any you'd like to send me, I'll pay postage. I usually trade off whatever I am using them on because I got tired of the car/truck/mower, never because of lube problem.

I took the numbers off my original Kohler filter and went to Auto-Zone. They put the Kohler numbers in their computer and gave me an STP filter that is the same thing. NAPA can do this also but their filters are a couple bucks more than the STP at Auto-Zone. There probably a little better but I change my oil twice a year and I use the STP filters. When I check my oil it always looks clean. Auto -Zone can cross referrence the spark plugs and the fuel filter to but they weren't able to find the air filter, I have to buy them at Sears. I've always been told that STP makes a good oil filter so I use them and they seem to work fine. If you live in PA you should have an Auto-Zone close by. Remember to use 10/30 WT. oil when you change it. If you have a push mower they almost all use straight 30WT oil. Hope this helps you out. Good luck ! Pap.

I recently purchased a Craftsman Lawn Tractor that uses a B&S #492632 oil filter in the Intek 24 HP V-Twin. By searching this forum, I found that I can use a NAPA FIL7035 equivalent. When I went to purchase one at the local NAPA store, the salesman suggested that I could use another, cheaper filter instead. It is about twice as long, hence has added filtering capacity, but costs about 1/2 as much because it is a commonly-used auto filter [sorry, I didn't get the NAPA FIL #]; he said it was otherwise equivalent. I do have the space to use a longer filter.

Does anyone have any comments regarding this substitution?

That "oil filter study" is nearly worthless. The last update to the site was 4 years ago and it is just his personal opinion. No where near a scientific study that would sway my opinion either way..

THe Napa stores I have visited usually have the filters for small engines.

Do not assume the longer filter has more filtering medium. The best NAPA filter for a Briggs is the short stubby. Additionally the 2003 Briggs update manual has some information on page 18.

The premium yellow filter (part # 696854) has 96 sq inches of filtering medium and filters particles down to 25 microns.

The Standard length oil filter (part # 492932) has 48 sq inches of filter medium and filters particles down to 36 microns. NAPA offers a filter at a lower price as a replacement for this filter.

Both engines take the same filter, ST3614 Super Tech from Wally, $2.48. Why pay more?

That Tecumseh filter has the same specs as the Briggs/Kohler filters. Use the appropriate length.
Some Tecs have a different gasket size, so one must check.

Go to the FRAM website at www.fram.com and try there. You can enter the PN in the competitor block. For instance,if you enter 5205002 (Kohler's PN) the database comes back with PH7575 and if you go to that filter, there are a bunch of crosses for other mfgs. Try it!

For those looking for a replacement for their oem 52-050-02 oil filter, check out Advance Auto Parts as they sell a Purolator Premium Plus oil filter for about $3 that matches. (#L10241) They also carry a K&N filter that also matches, but is around $13 each.

Any ideas on a cross-reference for an Oil filter for a Guardian 15000kw generator by Generac Power Systems, Inc.?
The engine is suppose to be manufactured by them also (yeah, right!!!) so they want you to use only their filters - what a crock! They've got a captive market here in Florida because everyone has one!!! The part number they gave for "Their" filter is: 070185B. I've checked everywhere that I know with no results. I put 070185B part number in at wixfilters.com and came up with 51394.

A 51394 would be considered a "Kawasaki" filter, although it fits other applications.

I have a 2007 John Deere lawn mower tractor with a 21hp briggs and stratton 2 cylinder engine. Can't see paying $15 for a filter part number GY20577. Need a cross reference.

Not to hijack this thread, but I changed the oil and filter for the first time today in my 20hp Kohler engine in my 42" lawn tractor. I've changed many oil filters over the years in many types of engines, auto and otherwise, but that was the toughest filter I've ever had to remove !!!! I almost tore it in two before I got it to start coming loose. Then I installed the new filter, ( I danged near fell over when they charged me $13 at Sears ! ) but to get that filter to seal without leaking, I had to tighten it way beyond what I should have had to do. Has anyone else ran into this problem?

Hello I need some help with cross referencing oil filters for a couple of walk behind mowers with Kawasaki engines they are : FC420V and FC460V I have used Kawasaki filters but they are expensive and I have used Napa but I don't remember the number. The last filters I bought were off brands and I don't think they even have a number. Can someone give me a list of good oil filter numbers I like to shop now at Autozone but they didn't seem to have any filters except some off brand called value something. Thanks

Try Kawasaki 49065-2078 or 49065-7010. Normal price $10 to $12. Tulsa Engine Warehouse about $9. Even cheaper on Ebay if you're OK with off-brand.

A friend is using a AM107423 filter on a LX255 Deere. I found the AM125424 on the Deere website. anyone know the difference?
He's 75 and I'm trying to help him out and get the correct one. All I seem to find is cross refs for each one and not descriptions

You have one! Get out your measuring tape and determine your current filter is about 3" long and then pick the 1st one on the list....
