JD 345 Engine Problems

I have a 2000 JD 345 with the 20hp Kawasaki liquid cooled engine (FD611V) with 625 hours. Recently this thing has become almost impossible to start. When cold if I give it too much gas or choke, I am getting backfires. If I start her cold on idle with choke, she will fire but runs rough and then I have to ease the gas until it catches.

Now once its running I can cut lawn for about 5-10 minutes and then it will do one of two things. Either die suddenly (not like it's out of gas) or start missing like she is on one cylinder. One it is sits for 5 minutes and I get it restarted (crank, crank, crank) it will run like a top for hours. Even stop for lunch and restart without issue.

Went to the dealer and I was going to start replacing ignition components one at a time but sticker shock prevented that. Anyone have any ideas?

Ask over at Weekend freedom machines lot of good tech support there for the JD. I dont know if you have carb or fuel injection, but if carb might be the fuel delay module
they are inexpencive and easy to replace

It could be the Time Delay Module ($14.25 on the 425s). Have heard of this being the culprit on several machines.

I'd check the coolant and thermostat. Sounds like you hit a problem about the time the thermostat opens.

One thing, which I keep mentioning, is leaky intake gaskets. It's a very easy thing to eliminate, by spraying WD-40 or some other combustible spray around the intake gasket area. If it smooths out, you'll have an idea of the problem, if it doesn't, look elsewhere. Of course the WD-40 won't cure the problem, only isolate it.

In your situation, when everything is cold, the parts would be contracted for a possible leak, as it warms they will expand to possibly seal the leak.
