Got my soil

so in spite of nasty weather, guess what I will be doing today!

Got my soil, got my containers, got my seeds.

...I think there is a song there.

Some of us are stuck behind a desk til 5pm. Schucks! Have extra fun for the rest of us! Oh, and when you take your break, I'm partial to anything with a little paper umbrelly in it.

Well your further along than I am Ellen, I haven't even gotten soil yet. Got containers all ready, but just haven't ventured out to get the soil. Not doing half as much this year though, so that may be why I'm so slow, :)

    Let Us Sow

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the flowers are so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let us sow! Let us sow! Let us sow!

We won't show signs of slowing,
And I bought some soil for growing,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let us sow! Let us sow! Let us sow!

    When we finally say goodnight,
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight,
These jugs can go out tonight.

    The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we're still seed sorting,
But as long as you sow with me,
Let us sow! Let us sow! Let us sow!

    Let Us Sow!

    Cute song Nancy!

Nancy Drew .... Now that is cool.

No sowing here today, although I would like to. We have had an ice storm and since I did my acrobatics on the ice on day one, I am on "house arrest", looking at my bruises and wishing I had everthing in the house instead of my potting area. We are lucky here, however, since they are saying over 23,000 customers in our state are without power. So far the birds haven't emptied my feeders and I still have a carpet of birds to watch.

    Good song Nancy Drew!

    Alberta,
How ya doing? I remember you from my first year of WS'ing, right?
I hope you're ok, as you say you're moving slowly - or are you just taking it easy! Nothing wrong with that.

They shut down Ohio State today AND our government buildings! I am so paranoid about falling on the ice. I slid out of my car a few weeks ago in a downtown parking lot and that was enough!

Great song ND! I sowed some of my Sweet William this afternoon.

I know what you mean about slipping and falling. I fell during one of our snow and ice storms, while getting in the car to take my son to school. I whacked my elbow on the pavement and it was a couple of weeks before it healed. I'm just not as young as I used to be... sometimes it's hard to get my head wrapped around that idea, though. Ahh... but my body reminds me on a daily (almost) basis.

    Hi Ellen
Yes, its me, Alberta, LOL. I'm ok, taking life as easy as possible, both hubby and I are both retired now and just plain getting old. My yard is so full of perennials that I have very little to really WS, so I'm dragging my feet alot this year, thats mainly one of the reasons I'm not out there buying any soil yet. I will probably be doing only about a dozen containers this year, and my favorite is Allysum, just have to have that every year. I've got alot of perennial poppies that come back every year, and penstemons also, many bleeding heart bushes (there not plants any longer, they are now bushes) and last year I got introduced to Day Lily's so I'm on a day lily kick this year. Happy Winter Sowing.

Thanks. I am staying in and learning that I like to stay "at home", but not "in home". I just keep looking out of the window at the sunshine and hoping it will melt some, but no such luck.

Last night I was reading a gardening book and saw a picture of a beautiful lilac bush. It reminded me of my childhood when everyone seemed to have at least one in their yard. I never see them anymore. Does anyone still grow lilacs? I think I would love to grow one.

It's snowy, rainy, sleety, slushy, cloudy, dark and gloomy here in DE. Been in the house all day going bonkers and looking out the window at my containers covered with snow and ice. The flat ones actually have little icicles hanging from them. Uggh!

PS: Well, to compensate, I ordered a bunch of perennials from Bluestone. Nothing like spending money when you're depressed!

Fran- you got me on Willy Wonka now:

There's no earthly way of knowing
    How many jugs we're sowing
Is it raining? Is it snowing? Is a hurricane a'blowing?
    ...
Are the fires of hell (that would be Zone 12) a'glowing?
    The danger must be growing!
For the sowers keep on sowing!
    And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing!

    STOP... THE BOAT!

    OH NOO it's catching! :)

Well now we know that gardeners' creativity extends beyond gardening.
Nice to see you again Alberta.
Alberta was one of the first that ever sent me seeds - I never forget.
Nancy and all be careful of slipping and sliding. A friend just slipped on ice last week, broke one leg, and sprained the other ankle. :retired prof - I'm with you, I'm really depressed on this gloomy day, but hey I know the sun will shine again. AND I WS'ed Salvia and Butterfly weed today.

Take care everybody, be careful if its icy, and on the roads.

I don't know about anyone else but I am getting tired of the, Wednesday rounds of snow, then sleet, then rain, then freezing!
I looked at the garden journal, gees since December 24th every Wed is either single digits or snow/ice storms, all but last Wednesday.
It's on January! We haven't had January weather like this in 15 years.

    soonergrandmom,
Lots of people around here have lilacs. Two years ago the blooms were particularly spectacular. Cruise through here on your way to daughter's house and I'll show you where to take a cutting. Mom's neighbor gave me a baby white lilac a couple of years ago. I thought it died last summer, but I noticed buds on it this week. If it survives the ice storm, maybe this will be the year of its first bloom. When the time comes, I can share that too.

Thanks seedmama. I will remember that when the weather improves a little. Right now our streets are really slick and we are supposed to have fog in the morning. We will be getting a late start this trip, but in the spring that would be lovely. White, wow. Busylizzy said they grow like weeds at her house. I just hadn't thought of them for a long time until I saw that picture last night. Everyone here is so nice. Best bunch of enablers I've ever met....and I love it. I would love to come by in the summer and see your red bed in bloom also.

Busylizzy said: "We haven't had January weather like this in 15 years."
I was so depressed yesterday - so gloomy the weather. I kept telling myself not to be such a wuss, there was such bad weather [worse] around the country. But it didn't work! I feel like it has been winter for 6 months. Someone said Winter is half over.
OMG! That made me feel worse. Somehow counting the days to spring seems shorter.

How many hours, Nancy Drew? :)

Well today the sun is out. Weak, but out.

Soonergrandmom, if you e-mail me I can send you some lilac seed. I remember smelling them on my way to school as a child. How I love that scent in the springtime! I think I sowed at least a dozen seeds! I want one under every window we have!!

    Yes, cute song LOL!

No soil here yet either, but like Alberta I'm not planning on sowing half as many this year and will be doing mostly annuals/veggies.

    Carol,
You should be receiving seeds from me pretty quickly; sent them out yesterday :)

    Soonergrandmom,

Yes, we are in the Lilac City (Spokane, WA)...well I am now 30 miles south of Spokane, but EVERYONE has at least one in their yard here too. My old fashioned Lilac should hopefully bloom 1st time this year; it was started via cutting in spring '04. BTW Spokane has the Spokane Lilac Festival Parade :)

Hey sooner! Here's a lilac for you (doesn't take much for me to post a pic) ---

    {{gwi:344780}}

Nancy, I've never gotten a seed on my lilac bush???? If I could, I'd cover every inch of my balcony with lilacs - love the fragrance!

    PV

Man those pics are beautiful. I can smell the lilac.
Where I lived as a girl we had a lilac hedge. I always associate the smell with my grandmother, who used to live with us.

Pvick, I got my seed from Teresa at T's. They were only a buck for 20 seeds. The only problem is the wait... it might take a few years for it to bloom. I'm sure it will be worth it, though.

Thanks, Nancy! The wait is not a problem for me at all. I like T's seeds; only problem is, if I go there, I'm bound to come away with other stuff too! I promised myself - no more seeds - yes, I did.

But, I'm off to check them out anyway....
