WS veggies

You mostly talk of WS flowers. Can veggies be started like this too? what about cabbage and broccoli now? And placed outside on south side of house.

Absolutely. A good bit of what I wintersow are herbs and veggies.

Here are some veggies I have WS:

    Broccoli
    Swiss Chard
    Lettuce
    Peas
    Tomatoes
Peppers (these will germ., but my growing season is too short to get a harvest on them)
Carrots (will germ., but must be transplanted early, or the roots will be crooked)

    Herbs that I wintersow:
Basil (I wait until April, since it's not frost tolerant)
    Chives
    Dill
    Cilantro
    Lavender
    Marjoram
    Oregano
    Parsley
    Perilla (shiso)
    Rosemary
    Sage
    Spearmint

    Welcome to wintersowing, Qumum!

Hey Bonnie, When do you sow those? Jan. Feb. or all in March?

Hi, Floodthelast! The lettuce, broccoli, chard, and most of the herbs, I did in January and February. The peas and tomatoes were in March, and basil was in April.

    Hope that helps!

That's a HUGE help Bonnie! Thanks so much for sharing your list with us.. I didn't have a clue on the tomatoes! :)

Sassy, we can wintersow tomatoes here in February. I'll be starting mine on Valentines Day indoors so I can clone them.

Hi Wendy! Floodthelast and I are both in zone 5, so you may be able to do things sooner than us. I guess I needed a disclaimer on that post, LOL.

Yes thank you very much for the insight. I am WS for the first time this year and want to get a start on my veg for the new bed I'm putting in. My husband hates having soil in the house so I'm hoping this makes him happy and give me more plants. Although I am filling the containers in the house so maybe I wasn't as thoughtful as I thought, lol.

My husband was horrified the first year I started WSing, when he saw me filling containers of dirt in the kitchen. He said there's a potting area in the garage. Yeah, well, that's fine in the spring or summer, but right now it's 40 degrees out there! I still do them in the kitchen, but I try to do it when he is at work or gone somewhere, so that he doesn't complain about it. Out of sight, out of mind!

Yeah but when he isn't here there is no one to distract my toddler and he loves playing in the dirt with Mommy.

I sowed my broccoli seeds beginning of March last year, the 2nd day, they were up March 25th, planted out in April.
Cauliflower I usually start inside, but going for Wsing this year probably in Feb.

Maters and peppers I sow inside because of my very short season here.
Most other veggies I direct sow

    Anyone every try celery?

Token - do you have a cloner? I do and love it!
Just curious what you've cloned in it.

Dirtbert, I have a homemade cloning machine. I've made some updates to it during the week I was building it. It's only been running about a week, but the pineapple salvia I did took 4 days to put out nearly 1/2" roots. I figure tomatoes should root just as quickly.

I can't believe how fast some things root. I'm trying to propagate some blue spires salvia that I have overwintering in the basement now. I took cuttings in the fall before the frost got it. I'll use it a lot more in the spring to take cuttings of annuals too, impatiens, zinnias, etc.

In my zone, I should be able to wintersow:

    cabbage
    carrots
    lettuces
    asparagus
    beets
    and radishes

And by this, I mean now. Right?

We need more zone 7 containers. LOL I'm also hankering for some home grown cabbage this spring. And people have been talking about how much better carrots taste than store bought.

Despite the odds for success being stacked way against me, I'll be sowing celery this year. I've included a link for some valuable information on celery and other cool weather crops shared by a valuable contributor on the Oklahoma Gardening forum.

I am in Zone 6 and normally have a very wet spring. I would love to sow things like broccoli and cabbage since that is about the only transplants I ever buy, but I am unsure of the timeframe to sow.

I grow tomatoes and peppers inside under lights and while I think tomato plants might be OK to WS, I can't imagine that peppers ever would be since I have been taught that if pepper plants even get too cold one time, it will effect their production.

Do you think mid February is about right for brocoli?

Bonnie ~ thanks for the disclaimer..lol I think I'll do an experiment and try a few veggies each month and see what month actually works best for our weird hot/cold winters. There's just not enough Zone 7 WS'ers around here!

Token - very cool on your 'cloning machine'.. lol
