Snow!

Nearly four inches here - kind of puts the "winter" in winter- sowing! :)

I am loving it, and we need the precipitation in any form so badly here.

Now, where is my potting soil. . .

We have had about 60 inches so far this winter... At least I can still wintersow!

rosebush - we also got snow today - about two inches and while I don't put my containers out in the "elements" (on covered porch), I am happy for those who do... but as far as the drought is concerned, it's disappointing that it takes about 12 inches of snow to make an equivalent of about one inch of rain - that's so disappointing, isn't it?

    Anyway - enjoy your snow!

We have about 4 inches here today too! I'm re-potting some houseplants and doing a little winter-sowing. The kids are gone snow-boarding and hubby is out pushing snow so I have to take advantage of my "quiet" time, LOL.

We had two inches here, mostly during the night. I had to get out of bed several times to look out the window to see it falling. I love snow, a hangover from my formative years in western Canada.
I am alone today, thought maybe a grandchild or two would come visit but I guess they are staying in bed. Took myself out though and built a three foot tall snowman. I am in now to warm up my gloves, grag a carrot and then out to finish the face. Happy Happy winter all, Les

We have snow but then it started to rain so I am sure by the end of the day things will be kind of messy here! I wish we would get a good snowman making snow,my son got a snowman in a box kit for Christmas and I was hoping we would get to use it soon! Les,I love the snow too, couldnt imagine a winter without it!

I'm happy for those of you who got rain/snow in the SE. I saw that on the weather and figured most down there must be thrilled to have anything wet fall from the sky.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I wish we'd get some snow. Not a lot, not the heavy 4" thick wet ice kind...just some good old fashioned fluffy stuff. Need some natural insulation for bulbs that sprouted in all this warm winter weather.
I'm one of those odd people who likes to be outside, all bundled up, while it's snowing the fluffy stuff. In the very wee hours of the morning there's a hush that's wonderful when no one else is out.

Hi Carrie and Rosebush , I see that you are in NC too. I am a new gardner but have had some luck in my efforts with gardening (to my surprise, i could kill the one and only one plant if i had one).

Plan to try out WS from tomorrow and can do with inputs on which plants do well in NC. Love Nasturtiums and have picked up some pkts only to learn thru GW that they do not bloom too well here. My roses are doing extremely well. Even rose propagation (knock-wood) in mid winter seems to have taken off well.

Today's snow was not bad...only hope ice later in the season does not get my rose bushes.

Not too sure my choice of seeds for NC has been correct. Can do with your inputs...

    Thanks !

I did nasturtiums last year, first time. I actually didn't WS them, but just placed a few seeds in the ground here and there. They came up and bloomed but the heat got to them. I will do them again just because it's so easy to put the seeds in the ground and I have a few leftover.

My favorites here are zinnias, malvas, hollyhocks (but JAP Beetles love malvas and hollyhocks), agastache, verbena, amaranthus, petunias, salvia blue bedder, victoria and coral nymph, onenthera, perilla, gaillardia, rudbeckias, coneflowers, stocks, texas blue bonnet (although they don't really like the heat all that much).. alyssum basket of gold (blooms second year) and annual alyssums - which I had no problem with when it was really hot - surprisingly..

Off the top of my head, those have been my favorites but I am sure after I submit this post, I will think of a few more....

Speaking of snow, we've had several small snows over the last month, and the temps have been soooo cold (currently 12 degrees) that it's still on the ground. Anyway, what we have is that nice, dry powder. I grew up in the south, with the wet, heavy snow. My question is, how do you get the powder to stick together? My son tried a couple of times last week to build a snowman, but got frustrated when he couldn't roll it into a ball, and quit.

    Thanks a bunch Carrie !

My list of perennials is also totally off the mark! Have yet to see dianthus and delphiniums here. Is it because these do not survive the sun ? I'll probably keep it to lavender, sedums and daylillies.

Can I grow daylillies from seeds? Just keeping my fingers crossed with the spring bulbs. Just yesterday I noticed that my irises had sprouted , almost 3"-4" high...well with the snow I hope at least the foliage will be back.

Soo...looking forward to the daffodils and tulips coming up in spring! Let's see how much of success I have with them.

I guess, I'll start a separate thread on the seeds of choice for WS in the NC forums ....

    Talk to you soon,

Carrie, my containers are on a covered patio as well. I just water them whenever it rains. . .And I was surprised at how little actual moisture the snow generates too - seems like it should be more.
Les, I'm dying to make a snowman! Good for you! :)Had to actually work yesterday. . .but it looks like more snow is on the way tomorrow.
Gulabmali, I've had good luck with nasturtiums some years and not others, but I don't winter-sow them. Daylilies will grow from seed, but they take a couple of years to bloom. Most any perennial is good for winter-sowing, but the annuals and the veggies I sow closer to spring.
    Happy sowing, all! :)

Our snow has come and gone and come and gone. The last big snow fall was a total of 9" in a 24hr period and then a few days later it was followed by rain, then snow in the late afternoon with thunder and lightening that evening...in that order too LOL!!
As for temps we haven't yet hit 0...mostley 20's and 30's day and night with the exception of the past few night dropping down into the single digits and teens. Expecting more single digits Monday and Tuesday night...brrrrrrrrrr! The birds have been eating the sunflowers like crazy, but think I will go down to the little store and get them a few blocks of suet.

Yesterday we had about 2" of snow before it turned to rain in the evening. Temperatures yesterday were near 31 then rose to about 37°F overnight. Even as I type the temperature outside is 45°F and windy. I can't wait till spring!!

Yup, snowed again here last night, only 2 inches. We still had to plow because of the upcoming low temps, or no temp Sunday night, BRRRRRRRR 0 degrees.
School support staff going on strike Monday, so an hour delay already, will need it to keep the woodburner going 24/7.
I am liking this snow so far this year getting 2-4 inches at a time, then gone.
Looking back at last years sowing calendar, not looking forward to another -10 to -20 we had in February.

Loooved the snow! long awaited. brrrr...its been awfully cold outside.

Thanks Rosebush! I am sooo... confused right now, that I will first need to prepare a list of WS perennials/annuals and then shop at Lowes / Home Depot for seeds. That way I will pick up the ones that do well here.

    thanks again.

    newbie in nj,

I know exactly what you are saying! When it snows there is this kind of quiet around you. When nobody else is out making sounds, you actually hear the snow hitting the ground. That is such a peaceful sound! And yes, we do need some good snow here!
