JD tractor

A feller had me stop over to look at his tractor. Said it won't start. Sez battery ok. Sez engine rotates, no start. Has fuel, and batty is "up"!

Went to look at it. Yep--engine rotates! Almost half a turn on the frame--bolts fell out of it! Loaded it up and brought it home. I'll look at it tomorrow.

A Dr. customer had me pick up his Toro Mower for a tune-up. Said its hard to start! No wonder--i couldn't see the fins on the air filter cartridge! Changed oil and sharpened blade. Starts easy now. Also, i watched a guy cutting down two ash trees that were at least 80 feet high! that guy was really brave. Those trees weren't all that thick! Maybe 15 inches. He was swinging on a rope and using a chain saw! Shudder!

I see a couple of JD LT's w/ Kohler command singles do this every year Rusty. Some rip the pipe out of the muffler, some tear at the wiring harness at the relays behind the engine. Have fun!

Yes, he already had the exhaust problem with having to replace the muffler. This man's yard is rough, with many roots, statues of deer, etc, and slopes. I'll start on it Monday. The thing really needs replaced in its entirety, but he has always been enamored of the theory of "Whipping a dead, or dying, horse!" He even has a toy cast model of a real JD farm tractor wired onto the hood! Doesn't help much, but keeps the hood closed!
If my memory serves me right, i think those bolts loosened in the past, and somebody else, maybe him, tightened them up. An inspection will show what is wrong, hopefully.

I did a sump on one that the owner did some "self tightening" on too. Here's too a simple repair!

WEEE! I'm hauling it to the JD Dealer tomorrow. I'm not going to do the job. They can handle it. After i got under it and saw the damage, i decided NO! I'll haul it up but they can fix it! My back hurts just looking at it!
I think the lock washers can't get a good grip on the hardened frame where they bolt thru it.
And, from what i saw, it looks like any threads are worn off, in the sump.

Went to get tractor from dealer. Wouldn't start! And, his almost new battery was missing, and they had installed a new one! His battery was 2 months old. He asked for the old one back-they gave him one that had to be 2 years old-all dirty and dusty. And, the big shops wonder why they are losing business!
I told those fools that i had recommended their shop, and i didn't like him being hornswoggled like that! If ya don't know what that means, it means being cheated with yer pants on! (Basically). Heck, the mechanic had to tune the engine before we'd take it home.
That dealership is located near Butler, PA. in a place that sells building supplies, etc., along with JD tractors!
It is on Rt. 356, west of Butler,PA. in case ya want to know!

Did they have to sump it? What kind of bill did your guy get? Too bad they didn't serve him right.

His bill was $185! It starts and runs, but that switcheroo on the battery leaves me a lot pizzed! Guess the only place left for good, honest service, in the w. Pa. area, is Town and Country, out by Big Knob, Pa. I've always gotten good results from them.
