Try disconnecting the ground wire that kills the mag where it comes from under the flywheel. It may be shorted to ground somewhere.

I tried guessing at what numbers you have there but a model /type is incorrect. That coil looks to be for an engine w/ points. Most Briggs engines you just install the electronic ignition coil on and skip the points if it has them . (For those w/ points under the flywheel).

Elvis is still alive! I clearly saw him driving a white and gold Cadillac on Elvis Presley Blvd. last year when I was in Memphis on a RR. impact test. Nobody will believe me though... :/

Your engine was built in 1993 The solid state coil for this would be a PN 398811 . Just watch for the markings on the coil so it is installed correctly. Best of luck.

Any idea how old this motor could be?? I have found NOTHING on a Sterling Wood Chipper online!!
