Craftsman GT5000 engine problems

my gt5000 won't start, it was running fine for awhile and it started to skip. it sounded like it was running on 1 cylinder. it has a kohler 25 hp twin. i pulled both plugs and checked them, they look ok. put them back in and it started but was still skipping. I pulled the air filter and it was spitting gas out. I shut it down and when the engine was almost stopped it backfired and started running backwards. Now it will not start. I suspect that the timing is off somehow. It has compression, spark and fuel. When you try to start it the engine will stop turning and kickback if you pull out the choke. with the choke pushed in it spins over but will not fire at all. anybody have any ideas?
